Changing paragraph style in pages without changing bolding or italicizing

I have a big Pages file that has various styles (heading, body, footnotes) mixed throughout it. I want to change the attributes in the body style (font, font size, line height) but I want to preserve the bolding and italicizing in those paragraphs. It would be a major PITA to have to go back and add them in manually. Is it possible, or does any given style absolutely include those attributes (plain, italic, bold) and there's no way to preserve them if I apply a new or updated style?
