Sharing Wifi Internet with Ethernet

In my apartment, I only have Wifi access.  I'd like to share my iMac's Wifi Internet with an Ethernet-only device.  I have enabled sharing in the sharing control panel (Share Wifi connection with Ethernet), yet the Ethernet interface only shows a self-assigned address, and the device doesn't show that it has an Internet connection.  What am I missing?

If you're connecting via a switch/router then make sure your iMac is plugged into the WAN port.

If you're connecting the device directly to the iMac instead of via a switch then you may need an ethernet crossover cable/adaptor.  Generally that's not an issue with newer network cards though.

More info on the setup and what the device is would be useful.

I'm not connecting them through a switch or router.  It's a Hue Hub, connected directly to the Ethernet port.  The crossover cable idea is interesting.  Maybe I should try that.
