My logic board in son's 2017 MBP fried. Instead of fixing it, we bought him a new 14". Unfortunately, he never was good at backing up his old drive and would like to take his old SSD out and throw it into an enclosure to recover his data. I'm a little confused at which type of enclosure is compatible with his 2017 drive, and have no idea what type of connectors the drive use. Will this work?

That enclosure doesn't have the right connector. The 2017 model has the following connector, which is described as a custom one:

    https://www.owc.com/solutions/aura-pro-nt

That company sells a few enclosures but I don't know if any are compatible with that:

    https://www.owc.com/solutions/external-drives?drive-type=bus-powered-portable

If the data is important to recover, another option would be to buy a cheap 2017 model, recover the data and sell it on again for parts:

An Apple Store or reseller might be able to recover it too.

    Thanks Marvin,
I read you links, but couldn't tell from the replacement drive card what connector it uses.
The other link looked to be all external backup drives, complete with SSD.

It's a proprietary Apple connector. OWC made a compatible model.

I doubt OWC's enclosures will support this connector type but it might be worth contacting OWC to see if they made any kind of adapter for it.

If not, the only options would be buying an old Mac with a compatible connector or asking an Apple store or reseller to do the data recovery.
