Moon Puzzle

in General Discussion edited January 2014
One day, two guys decided to have a race starting at the equator and ending at the respective Poles.

Guy 1 got to go to the North Pole.

Guy 2 got to go to thhe South Pole.

As luck would have it they both managed to get to their respective poles at exactly the same time. ( Ok its a fictional story ).

Anyway, both guys take a picture of themselves standing with the polar pole behind them .. yes.....red stripes and all.

Everything in each picture is identical in all respects.

( lets forget the winter/summer thing ) .....except for something very strange about the moon.

After studying the images both realise they had just discovered a really wierd but logical phenomena.

What was it they discovered ?

That the earth is round and therefore the phases of the moon looks different from different places along a north-south line. Like around the equator the shadow of the monn goes from up to down (or the other way. Don´t know) and it goes from left to right on one of the poles and the other on the other. So If one saw the left side of the moon in darkness the other saw the right side.

Who told you that? Our Minister of Information told us it was flat, like the city of Baghdad.

Because of the tilt of the earth, the moon is bigger on one pole than the other, causing one of the heads of the two explorers to explode.

The Moon isn't visible from the poles.

One photo shows the moon to the left of the pole, the other shows the moon to the right of the pole....the north pole view would show the Earth rotating counterclockwise and the south pole view would show the Earth rotating clockwise.

That it is indeed made out of cheese, oddly enough. This is an old one, I've heard it before.

If we assume that we are at the equinox and there's a half moon one would see one half dark, lets say the right side of the moon, and the other would see the other half dark, left side of the moon.

    Am I right?

    ANSWER

Actually the Phases of the moon are definitely part of the answer, but the whole answer is that the Moon would appear to be UPSIDE DOWN relative to each of the images taken.

    Don't believe me !

For those of you living in the Northern Hemisphere take a visit to the South pole, the moon will be upside down relative to your experience of seeing the moon in the North.

Standing at the Northern Pole you are looking down onto to the Top of the Moon ( since the moon rotates around the equator of the earth ) Thus, the Top of the moon you are looking at IS the Northern pole of the moon.

Southern Moon watchers would see the Moon's South Pole on top for exactly the same reason. All the phases & major craters would be upside down.

PS The moon IS visble from the Poles

Why do you think they send astronomers to the poles. ?

thats basically what half the people in this thread said.. if the shadows are flipped, so is the moon... its not like the light reflecting off the moon would change depending on where you are standing...

I don't know why, but that Star Wars quote made me think of this.
