Pegatron has been working to increase its presence in India since registering a local subsidiary there in 2020, and planning an initial $150 million investment in the country. It also spent $14 million on land for a new iPhone factory, which was opened in September 2022.

According to Reuters, the company is already looking to further increase its manufacturing capacity in India. Citing two unnamed sources, Reuters says that talks are underway about leasing a facility within Mahindra World City near Chennai, close to the existing plant, and about 200 miles from New Delhi.

One of the two sources reportedly said that the factory is intended "to assemble the latest iPhones."

Apple has not commented. Pegatron would not discuss details, but did say that "any acquisition of assets will be disclosed based on regulations."

Like many or most Apple suppliers, Pegatron is looking to move away from over-reliance on China, especially as US/China trade tensions continue.

On the AppleInsider cover page, I read the headline: “Pegatron plans second iPhone plant in India”. As my eyes journeyed south to William Gallagher’s name, they took a small detour to the left and spied Chinese characters. I suspect that this photograph is of a building in China, not India. :-)

Within the article, I see the picture caption: “seeks to expand…outside of China.” That’s a better fit, but a stock image of the plant in India, a little Devanagari, would still be charming.
