Sharing an External Hard Drive

I am not very familiar with file sharing in Mac OS X. Here's the situation. I have a Powerbook and an eMac with a 120GB LaCie Hard Drive attached to it. I would really like to have access to the whole drive on my laptop, for my iTunes library etc. I don't really care about accessing files on the eMac but if there is an easy way to share some basic folders that would be great too. My main concern is being able to see the whole FW HD. Can someone walk me through all the settings that I need to have? Thanks a lot!

Christopher

If you turn on personal file sharing this will enable the share of ~/public. I guess the quickest way to share the whole FW drive would be to make a link/alias to it in the public folder !!!

I am sure someone well correct me if I am wrong.

Presuming you're connecting the two Macs via Ethernet, it's pretty easy: boot the eMac, and get the Firewire drive mounted on the Desktop. Then go to System Preferences > Sharing and turn on Personal File Sharing.

Plug your Ethernet cable into both machines (doesn't matter if it's crossover or not) and make sure in System Preferences > Network that they have similar (but not identical) IP addresses in the TCP/IP tab of the Built-in Ethernet window.

On the PowerBook, go to the Finder, Go > Connect to Server (or just hit Command-k) and click the disclosure triangle so you see two panes, and wait for the machine to search the network (doesn't take long). You'll see both machines pop up in the left-hand column, select the eMac (double-click or click and Connect), then enter your login and password when prompted.

You'll now be asked which drives you want to mount, one of which will be your Firewire drive. Click it and it will mount on your desktop...

The whole drive becomes visible and works as if it were plugged straight into the PowerBook. Watch out though, Ethernet is not terribly fast compared to Firewire, so you might notice the odd bit of beachballing.
