The notion of a large flat-panel monitor being hung on a wall is perhaps not so silly, though. Perhaps some of the rumored wireless monitor development is oriented toward something like that.
Wireless doesn't have to mean battery-powered. It could get its power from a standard wall plug. There need be no wire between the monitor and the CPU, however. That would be pretty cool, IMHO.
It'd be cool if Apple would partner with Bretford or some other desk maker and built a desk that was meant to be used with a wireless display. Then they could use something like this to power it from below the desk, wirelessly.
I can see a couple of problems with suspending the flat panel by cords . . . It won't stay in one place very well, especially if there is a breeze (ala open window near by), and it also requires the tower be positioned nearby. some folks like to have things separated a bit.
have any of you, other than the original poster, ever even thought of or visualized something that was totally new?
here is what i see the poster having thought of:
- a way to position a display that is totally new
ok. so the thought of a display dangling by itself is not useful. yes, totally agreed.
so, what i would like the original poster to do is to let us know what was in his head when he thought this up.
what real life problem does this concept solve?
does this concept have the ability to become something different? like, making it a more easily positionable display than current "hard armed" systems.
or, maybe is this a way to easily attach a tablet display at different desks in the same house or office, therefore making it a a way to fix a tablet without taking space on a desk that is otherwised used for other tasks?
refine the concept. develop the execution further.
we should be a community of people thinking different, after all.
well I am the original poster so here is what i was thinking. I don't like the way cinema displays must be on your desk at a certain angle. I would like them to be wall mountable or be able to hang them from the ceiling with strong cables so they are truely flat and at the exact height you want them. the imac arm accomplishes this for an imac lcd but i dont really think it would hold a 23" display.
as far as the tall speaker looking tower. I got that idea from the long mobo rumors and i liked the idea of a real speaker instead of a cheesy one but really I would probably rather pipe the sound out to a real audio system. just toying with some concepts. thanks for asking.
1. If you touch it, it would swing back and forth before setteling after some time. Rather uncomfortable to work with don't you think?
2. It would look stupid!!
3. It would be difficult to adjust the angle unless it was mounted in some sort of framework. Not exactly an elegant solution if you ask me.
4. Mounting the wires to the roof is not something that is in line with Apples "3-step" set up policy. "The new cinema display - now with PowerDrill?".
A better solution is to give the current display lineup an iMac-like arm. The only problem is that it will need a rather heavy foot with the biggest screens. I think we'll see the same display design for some time while Apple is designing a better solution to this problem.

Say goodby to your $2000-$3000 monitor....

Well, you would use a Really Strong Cable ...

thnx for responding.
you have validated yr idea i think.
i agree, there should be a way to avoid taking up desk space in the way that the birthday cake (current iMac) does.
wall mounted is good. pls design the arm and bracket that does this and make a few thousand dollars doing it. serious.
good job.
better still: wait until the tablet comes out. then have yr arm bracket hold the tablet.
