new ipod enclosure

does anyone recall the patents apple filed for a "computing device with dynamic ornamental appearance"? there was speculation that this was for new tower enclosures, but why wouldn't this be for the new ipod?

i don't know...i think the iMac dome glowing multiple colors would be cool...maybe the strip around the floating screen too...maybe the new tower also...but with the iPod and laptops it would: use battery, get dinged up and scratched...also the iPod is usually in a protective case or in a pocket or hangin on your belt...not much need for glowing case...

but make that iDome/iMac glow and wheeeee, we are having some fun now....

Its seems (at least to me) that the glowing/changing of color etc will probably be an inicator when an Apple device is within range of a wifi network, or perhaps in range of a compatible rendezvous service or something along these lines.

As far as the ipod is concerned, Apple could theoretically equip the ipod with a wireless networking card so that when another ipod user is within range, that person's playlist would now be available on your ipod (if at least for only the short while when the two (or more) of you are within range.)

The same could be so for Apple's "cummonication device." Apple doesn't need to partner with a celular company to create a communication device. Instead, they simply need something that interacts with wifi and rendezvous so that when you and another person with a compatible communication device are within range, it lights up, you now know that you are among friends and therefore feel compelled to communicate over the wireless network.

Such a technology could encompas a full range of communication mechanisms including text, voice, photo and video. Now, assuming it has a hard drive, you could archive all your communications and come back to them at a later date, send them to friends, post them on the web or simply transfer them to your computer.

It's an ingenious idea if in fact this is what Apple is planning to do with such technology.

The illustrations for the patent showed the monitor and CPU enclosures.

For the ipod, the main issue would be battery life.

What would be cool is if Apple took a page from Cronenberg and his pulsing, writhing game consoles from eXistenZ.

On second thought, no, that was weird and creepy.

Several sites are reporting that the new iPod will have a larger screen and will have the potential to display JPEG images. Perhaps this means color? We'll know soon enuf.

Has anyone considered that the "ornamental appearance" might just be how the power buttons pulse when the Mac is asleep? Sometimes we try to read so much into things when this simple function might be the answer.

If the iPod got USB and the ability to pull images directly from digital cameras (to act as a digital wallet basically) that would be an awesome advancement.

Could this explain the rumored presence of USB 2.0 on new iPods, but the lack of the same on Apple's computers?

USB 2.0 on the iPod for better compatibility in the Windows world, and to make it available in the Mac world without competing directly with Firewire for the hearts and minds of peripheral developers?
