Laurene Powell Jobs pays $70 million to break San Francisco house price record

Businesswoman and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs has bought a 100-year-old mansion in San Francisco's Billionaires Row, spending $70 million on the 17,300-square-foot home.

Powell Jobs, widow of Steve Jobs, is known for running the Emerson Collective, launching the Steve Jobs Archive, and also for buying The Atlantic magazine. For herself, she's reportedly now set a record for buying the most expensive property in San Francisco.

According to The Real Deal real estate publication, Powell Jobs now owns 2840 Broadway Street in the Pacific Heights region of the city. It was a private sale, and despite setting the record, the $70 million she's paid is significantly under the $100 million price the previous owners wanted.

Those previous owners are believed to have bought the property in 2011 for $33 million. It's a four-story Spanish Renaissance Revival mansion, described by Architecture Digest as "the most beautiful house in America."

There's a two-story glass-covered courtyard, and the north side of the house is four stories of glass. From there, Powell Jobs will be able to see the Golden Gate Bridge.

Doubtlessly factoring in to the asking price was that the house is within walking distance of not one but two Apple Stores. Staff at Apple Chestnut Street, and Apple Union Square will probably be seeing her for Today at Apple sessions.

What a wonderful title would have been: “Lauren Powel Jobs saved 30% on buying her new home in Prime Day!”

But nasty news about Apple et all… brings page views… aka ad revenues!

Real estate generally maintains or increases value. It’s not like dropping 70 mill on consumable goods.

Unless you are Sam Altman of OpenAI fame, his I have made it house is a lemon. What is ultimately sad is a builder (Troon Pacific) cutting corners on a client who can pay.

Maybe Sam should design a AI for Real Estate/Construction to out bad builders Troon has been involved in other big time court cases on the level of Trump Enterprises.

There's nothing negative about the headline. She broke a record. Whether that's good or bad is up to the reader.

Who is to say she won't donate the sale proceeds after her death? Did you think of that? Of course not because that would require looking ahead.

And by the way, how much have YOU given to charity lately? What is your estate plan?

Nonsense argument. There is no obligation for a philanthropist to spend everything they have on philanthropic endeavors. Do you donate all of your money? Should you be faulted for that?

It does support "opposites attract" that is for sure. I'm not sure I'd find it restful to live there but I'd sure give it a try.

If it was for living in maybe but some of these purchases are most likely just investments and for events. A 24-room house would be difficult to maintain for someone living there alone. She owns at least 2 properties in San Francisco, 1 in Florida and 4 in Malibu. She will live in one of them most of the year and the others will be empty for 11 or more months of the year. Housing is being treated more and more like the stock market where people just build up a portfolio of empty homes.

Sometimes it's to enjoy the luxury of a main home in a vacation home and will only be occupied for a small amount of time.

Billionaires are bad for humanity.   People really do want a monarchy/oligarchy in this country.  jfc.

It is all a cultural thing and the way your society is designed. You need these people that don't create jobs or push things forward. US citizens and corporations simply pay less in taxes and you have a Gini coefficient at the level of Saudia Arabia to show for it. But spending 70 million on a home...

I'm surprised the record is only $70mil. That's far better value than New York or London.

That is the nature of human beings since the dawn of civilization a certain percentage of people are pre-wired to suck up, everyone has worked with a number of people where their personally changes 180 degrees when certain people walk into a meeting or a gathering. The change can be rather comical sometimes.

Nice to be able to buy such things. Good for her.

Right next door to Jony Ive too. That's cool.
