Apple and Sun?

Back in July we heard about OpenOffice coming to OSX.

I can't wonder what else Apple has been doing along side Sun. Does any one else think that Apple could be looking towards Sun for their next-gen chips?

"Sun was less revealing when it came ot its upcoming high-performance UltraSPARC IV and UltraSPARC V processors........The chip will include clock frequencies from 1.2 to 2GHz."

If Apple wants to keep Altivec, perhaps they are making a hybrid chip from one of these.

I don't know too much about Sun.....how realistic is this theory? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Coming just after IBM announces the "Power5" fo desktop, Sun would have to make something truly awesome to convince Apple to shift architecture.

    Doubful.

Sun has always hated Apple, they do not provide Java for MacOS or MacOS-X, the two have never cooperated. I can see no reason why this is going to change.

    Doubtful, indeed!

I know someone who works @ Sun. There are a lot of Mac users @ Sun, and I know that they've been pressuring the Board to support OS X at least, but to no avail.

Now I don't know exactly what was meant by 'supporting OS X'; I DO know there are frustrated and disappointed Mac users working for Sun.

Sun's no two-bit operation: anything they do, they go whole-hog; if they were co-operating w/ Apple, they'd be co-operating.

    They're not.

That's a load of trollop. Apple is the only manufacturer and OS provider that provides built in Java support on every computer they sell. It's built into OS X and Apple has been doing a lot of work on Java that Sun will be including in their future versions.

The only thing currently holding Apple back from Java 1.4 is they are rewriting some aspect of the code from carbon to cocoa due to some limitation.

I forget the exact story behind it so someone actually involved in Apple's Java community can feel free to fill it in but where Java is involved Sun and Apple are big buddies right now.

Steve demoed OS X's Java API during Scott McNealy's keynote a few JavaOne's back.

    "Hate"? No.

Mind you, Sun's worldview of Java is slightly... tinted/tainted. They're in denial about Java needing to become fully open source...

You'd find that's by Apple's choice than anything from Sun. They still work very closely together on its development and implementation.

The actual agreements in place are pretty interesting.

Yeah, less you would see a power4 first. And for that matter you won't see a power4, because the power4 and spark are both too expensive.
