The rumor mill has already moved to the iPhone 17 series. Still a little early for any sort of credible theories though: development probably hasn't even reached the EVT stage yet. Apple would be in proto right now.
Apple would probably reach EVT in January-February 2025, DVT a couple of months later, and PVT in May-June with a production ramp happening in late July/early August.
The biggest change will likely be a far better SoC due to a process node change to TSMC 2nm. It will be a much better device than the iPhone 16 series regardless of what they do with the display, camera, and other internals. There's a good chance that the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max will have 12GB RAM which will have better performance especially if an AI model is running.
Of course, the iPhone 17 series isn't expected until September 2025.
Of more current interest are the details of Apple Intelligence features scheduled to debut in iOS 18. Much of the differentiation of the iPhone 16 series has to do with Apple Intelligence (implemented in software). The 8GB RAM in these handsets enable Apple Intelligence. Obviously the iPhone hardware won't be changing for the next ten months. The expectation is that Apple will release new Apple Intelligence functionality with each of the iOS 18 minor releases at least to 18.4 (18.1, 18.2, 18.3, 18.4). By May 2025 they will likely be done with releasing new functionality for iOS 18 and just be issuing security and bug fixes.
