Apple CarPlay and iPhone 11 phone problems

I have a 2024 MY Mazda3 and an iPhone 11 (iOS 18.3.1). I can connect phone and car via Apple CarPlay and everything except the phone works fine (including Siri). When I try to use the phone via CarPlay all audio is via the phone and not the Mazda's speakers. All other apps that play audio play through the Mazda's speakers.

So I then tried my wife's iPhone 14Plus connected to the Mazda's CarPlay. All apps (including the phone) work correctly. All audio plays through the car's speakers.

When I look at the Mazda3's Owners Manual there is a page that lists the following:

The following models differ depending on the vehicle model and date of
manufacture.

iPhone 12 Pro Max
iPhone 12 Pro
iPhone 12
iPhone 12 mini
iPhone SE (2nd generation)
iPhone 11 Pro Max
iPhone 11 Pro
iPhone 11
...
iPhone 5s

So I wonder if that means only iPhone 13 and later work correctly with Apple CarPlay in Mazdas. I should add that my previous car was a Subaru XV 2014 MY and my iPhone 11 worked perfectly with that car.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
