Apple has announced a new immersive content experience for the Apple Vision Pro in the form of a Metallica concert, which will be available on March 14.

With high-resolution 180-degree video from the band's M72 tour in Mexico City, viewers will be able to experience performances of three full Metallica songs: "Whiplash," "One," and "Enter Sandman."

Apple's latest immersive experience, simply dubbed "Metallica," will offer "unprecedented access" to James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett, and Robert Trujillo, from wide-angle views of the band to points as close as the famed Snake Pit. The announcement was posted on the Apple website.

Apple built a unique stage layout with a total of 14 Apple Immersive Video cameras. The iPhone maker used "a mix of stabilized cameras, cable-suspended cameras, and remote-controlled camera dolly systems that moved around the stage." The band's performance was recorded from multiple angles, allowing for a unique immersive experience.

Apple's Vice President of Marketing and Communications, Tor Myhren, said that the company was "thrilled to collaborate with Metallica on a concert unlike any before it." Myhren added that the immersive experience lets you "feel like you're right there: front row, backstage, and even on stage with one of the biggest bands of all time."

Metallica's drummer, Lars Ulrich, also detailed his experience with the Apple immersive concert in an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, which is available on the SXSW YouTube channel.

Users of the Apple Vision Pro will be able to access the "Metallica" immersive experience on March 14, as it will be available in the Apple TV app at no cost. Customers can also experience the concert at Apple Store locations, as the company offers demos of the Apple Vision Pro headset.

I probably would buy an Apple Vision Pro if I could watch ABBA's VR experience in it.

    ABBA would be fun!

Modern artists like Empire of the Sun is ripe with AVP potential as well. Sports and concert entertainment is where this is heading.

This is exactly where I think Apple should be focussing its Vision Pro efforts - on unique content.

With the current size and weight, the Vision Pro is an accessory that users will comfortably wear for an hour or two per day. This makes it the perfect device to consume content such as movies, concerts or sporting events in ways that traditional devices can't match.

I also think this approach would be key to growing the Vision Pro's user base. Apple should partner with many top musicians and sports teams to buy tickets to single events or season passes to an entire season or concert tour. Metallica is more my speed, but imagine the number of Vision Pros Apple could sell if it offered the ability for Swifties to "attend" Taylor Swifts's Eras tour last year! My daughter flew to Paris for her concert since it was actually cheaper to go to Europe than buy tickets on the resale market stateside. I'll save the Ticketmaster monopoly and criminal resale ticket market in the US for another discussion.

Apple could sell a single viewing of an artist performing at any date from their tour for a lower price, and allow repeated viewing for a higher price. With the same single and repeated viewing pricing model for the concert tour, where artists often have different opening acts or surprise guests in addition to different set lists.
