Steam will cut support for macOS 11 Big Sur in October
Gamers with older Macs who want to keep using Steam will need to upgrade to macOS Monterey or later if they can, as Valve is cutting support for macOS Big Sur in October.

Steam
Steam is a mainstay of PC and Mac gaming, selling hundreds of thousands of games for multiple platforms. While it does operate a macOS storefront, it will be culling support for some users if they refuse to update their operating system.
In a Steam Support post, the Valve Software-operated store warns that it will officially stop supporting macOS 11 Big Sur on October 15, 2025. After that date, the Steam client won't run on that and earlier versions of macOS.
The company strongly encourages all Mac users to update to macOS 12 or later.
The reason for the update is due to Google Chrome, as Steam uses a heavily modified version of the browser, and that it doesn't work properly with older versions of macOS. Furthermore, Valve adds that Steam will require some macOS features and security updates available only in macOS 12 and later for future releases of the client.
Valve points out that Apple ended security updates and technical support for Big Sur in 2023, and that it would be beneficial to the user to regularly update their computers. It's warned that computers running older operating systems are susceptible to new malware and other exploits, which may never get patched.
This is not the first time Steam has warned of the end of support for older macOS versions. In 2023, it advised that a February 2024 update will stop support for macOS 10.13 High Sierra and 10.14 Mojave, after providing basic updates to the client to maintain the ability to play 32-bit games.
In June, Valve finally released a beta version of the Steam client that included native support for Apple Silicon.
