    Select the item.

Menu item File->Get Info (Or Cmd-I)

Click on the icon at the top. Cmd-C to copy. Cmd-V to paste where ever.

(Note - this won't get you the full 128x128 goodness, as far as I can tell, but just the smaller 64x64 size used in the Get Info panel. Anyone know how to get the full size version?)

When you copy the icon from the Finder you are getting the entire icon family, which isn't a contiguous image and can't be pasted into most apps (such as Photoshop) normally. So OS X just pastes the masked 32x32 version in other apps that don't know how to handle icon families.

The Finder Copy and Paste of icons is meant for use within the Finder, between icons. Some apps, like Iconographer, will let you paste an entire icon family. Then, with the 128x128 thumbnail selected, you can select "Copy Icon and Mask."

Then you can dump that where ever you want.
