artwork on ipod?

in iPod + iTunes + AppleTV edited January 2014
i was just updating artwork for a few albums in itunes then i plugged in my ipod and it had to resync/update all the tracks that i had added art to. additionally, the "space used" on the ipod grew a little as the files were updated. What's being added to the ipod that takes up space?

    oh wait, actually the size is not going up, the size of the files that need to be updated just gets deducted before the files get added again.
