I know this is a dumb question but I am thinking of buying a B&W G3 and I need to fit it a space about 16 by 16 while it is off. Do the handles come off or is it all one piece of plastic? Sorry in advance.
The handles come off, you just need an allen wrench. I'm not sure what size though. In fact, the case plastics start swooping up before they get to the handles so you could save even more space by just removing all the plastic. It would be tough to do and it would look like crap afterwards, but I'm pretty sure it's just a metal box skeleton underneath the plastic.
i find one of the most expensive and needless ways of removing the handles is to ship your b&w with UPS. those [fvcking] [bastards] broke all 4 of my handles when i shipped with them. actually they didn't come off cleanly, theres still jagged plastic around the edges. and those [fvcking] [bastards] still haven't given me my insurance. [end of angry anti-UPS mode] i'll have to look into getting one of them wrench-type dealies to remove the handles. didn't realize it could be done.

And did you ship it in it's original box with the styrofoam guides? If not, don't expect anything from UPS. Don't want to be sending a glass cup thrown in a box...

i didnt have the original styrofoam and box, but i bought a (fairly thick) box, and lots of styrofoam from a mbe. i made sure that the box was strong enough to take some reasonable pressure. overall, a more than reasonable attempt at securing it. i can only imagine what they did to it though. i had simultaneously shipped 3 other boxes and all three were mangled in some manner or another. one had a gaping hole in the side, luckily it didn't contain any loose items (or, i guess, none that i remember).
I worked at UPS.....I saw some serious box abuse from time to time. Not always on purpose...but the belts are rarley stopped for a jam. Those belts will pile up and destroy boxes and still keep moving. When things got too jammed, we'd resort to any means to get the jam undone, if you know what I mean.
Packaging has some to do with damage, but in some cases a steel box wouldn't spare the contents
