virtual pc or real pc

I'm finally gona switch! My powerbook 12" will be here next week, I hope.

Now I need to know wich pc-emulation-software is the better choice.

I don't need windows, since I allready own a license. I'll use win 98 with AutoCAD and Kazaa.

Is Virtual PC available without Windows?

Will real PC 1.1 work on the Powerbook until the new OS X version is released?

Is there any other PC-emulation out there?

What should I do, is it worth waiting for real PC (it's cheaper and perhaps it will be faster)?

    By the way, does anybody know this program: PCx1.1b5? It's a freeware emulationprogram I've found on Google.

    You mean you have *two* Windows 98 licenses, right?

    FWB swears they are going to make the next version of real PC worth waiting for.



    meanwhile, virtual pc is in the hands of microsoft, which means they may either a.) let it die on the vine, b.) actually be able to add resources more quickly and easily than connectix ever could, c.) bloat it into uselessness, d.) require a windows license with every copy (connectix gave you the option of having just DOS and roll your own OS) e.) kill off any linux support (VPC 5 and 6 could do RedHat, maybe more)



    or all of the above...



    if you can get virtual pc 6 cheap, and have a copy of windows already, give it a try. it works great for me for web design (which is all i use it for)

    Well, technically, your Win 98 license is probably bundled to your PC, so you may not use it with your Mac.



    But since I do not work at Microsoft, I couldn't care less

    I don't know the freeware emulator you were referring to. I have heard of bochs (sf.net) though, which supposedly is sloooow, but other than that, works fine.



    I doubt any software-based emulator would harm your system.

    Cool so FWB finally decided to revive RealPC. I think I have their eariler release on CD *SOMEWHERE* around here... I just need to find it.... anywho... I may get this...

    RealPC is supposed to include 3D hardware support, so, if you have, say, a Radeon 9000 Pro in your Mac, Windows will see it as a Radeon 9000 Pro and games and applications will use it as such, not like how VirtualPC used to do 3D support by emulating it (when VirtualPC actually had 3D support, that is).



    It would be interesting to see how well RealPC would perform running games; if it does decently with today's current hardware, it should really do well when the PPC 970 Macs come-out. I just fear that it might do too well, though, and game makers might put system requirements on the box like this for example:

    Minimum System Requirements (PC):

    2GHz Pentium 4

    256MB RAM

    1GB HD space

    64MB VRAM

    Geforce 4 MX



    Minimum System Requirements (Mac with RealPC):

    1.6GHz PowerPC 970

    512MB RAM

    1.5GB HD space

    128MB VRAM

    Geforce 4 Ti 4600





    And then we never see a Mac port because their game "runs on Macs."



    On the plus side, I guess, we'd be able to run all games no matter what...

    I hope this updated version of Real PC plays a DOS game I like. It's called Mugen. Check it out here.
