Advanced Storage Technology Ideas...

I just wanted to get your thoughts on some really future hardware ideas...
I'm thinking of what will replace conventional hard drives in the next decade. Those things can only spin so fast and have so much cache buffer before you hit a wall...will solid state storage ever be reliable enough to hold what we put on our drives now? Or how about some optical storage with no moving parts, like an hd sized lucite block that can store terabytes of data?
Please give your thoughts, I'd love to hear some decent technical stuff too as well as the way out guesses.
