DVD-R...which play in many players w/o problems?

I just bought a stack of Apple media, but at $3 a disc I'd love to find cheaper options in the future--since some of these are DVDs I'm backing up for travel (w/DVD2OneX) I need them to play in as many players as possible.



What media have people found that is highly compatible, doesn't make coasters and, hopefully, is less than $3 a pop?

    I've used the Verbatim and Apple brand 1x and 2x media for a couple of iDVD projects and they have played back fine with my Sony 300 disk carousel, a Apex deck, and a Toshiba deck.
