I can't download Mac OSX 10.2.6, It looks done but status still says installing.....

I'm very new to Macs so not sure if I'm doing something wrong. In the software update window the blue bar/meter is full, the status says installing/ restart will be required. Eventually the process is cancelled saying I have to download via desktop, which I try and the status just says installing. It's been 2-3 days and I can't seem to download. itunes went through O.K.
