? iTunes look for mp3's on hard drive

Can itunes search out mp3's that are on my hard drive? I transferred about 20 gigs of music from another mac and itunes can not locate them. I tried to transfer them into my Music folder. iTunes could not find. I then moved them all into the acutal itunes folder. iTunes can not find them. I think i have duplicated all these mp3's as my available hard drive space is dwindling. What did we do before we had 60 gig hard drives? Please help me organized this mess. By the way, when i say iTunes can not find song, it asks me to browse to locate the file. This would take forever with 20 gig of wayward music. Thanks for any assistance you guys may provide.

    In iTunes: file menu: add to library and choose the folder where all your MP3s are located. Is that what you're trying to do?
