Possibly a new iBook will get the new G3 from IBM. IBM claims speeds up to 1GHz and faster bus speeds and lower power requirements. iBook might also get bluetooth, faster CDRW, some minor mechanical fixes.

New iBook is confirmed by an Apple employee here in Sweden. According to him it was initially intended to be released in mid-October, but the last time he gave word it was postponed til early November by reasons he wouldn´t say.

I have worked close with him in a Apple Education project at my old firm, and he is to be trusted.

If it is a trusted source, be careful what you say about him/her. We need all the tips we can get, without "biting the hand that feeds us" completely off. (Biting smiley, not laughing)

what is this obsession with bluetooth???

I mean, why incorporate bluetooth if you don't get an airport card in your ibook, if they even take out the audio in. Strange privileges, some of you pose...

He wouldn´t say. But it is substantial in some way.

He called up a big customer to say, "don´t buy now, wait for a few weeks, the release was sat to mid-October, but delayed a few weeks. Don´t buy now".

This customer was supposed to buy approx. 200 iBooks. So it was a nice gesture.

He didn´t say anything about the speccs

I don't think we'll see a G4 iBook (not quite yet), but I do think we'll see a 13" screen (combining the 12" and 14" models into one), a refreshed form factor, and slightly lighter weight. Maybe Bluetooth? Not sure.

    G4 CPU.

It's time. Widespread Altivec optimizations have rendered the G3 obsolete. Without Altivec, current PPCs are utterly pathetic when compared to Wintel CPUs. The iBook's performance lags so far behind that of Wintel laptops that it's hurting sales....the iBook is a good 2-3 years behind comparable Wintels in performance.

Hopefully a modified 750fx: they're faster than meets the eye (in non Altivec applications of course).

Edit: An article (<a href="http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=5927"; target="_blank">link) at The Inquirer mentions that the 750fx was meant to use SiLK (I assume that this means manufactured with Silicon on Low K dielectrics) but actually uses FSG low-k dielectric at the moment.

Not being a chip manufacturer, I don't know what the (practical) difference is: anyone know?

Where do you need processor power? iBook is enough powerful for www & emails & writing docs etc... iBook is ideal computer for that kind of work, because it's small, battery life is good and it isn't so heavy. If you need powerful computer, buy workstaion PC with Intel P4 or faster processor.
