TiVo's brave new move...
I really don't mind TiVo's move on this since I'm not currently a subscriber, but isn't there some sort of privacy issue with this?

great, now television can microanalyze the viewing audience even further. it'll be pretty funny if sports teams start benching players that don't cause people to stay tuned to the tv or something like that.
funny, i thought the world of max headroom was supposed to be fictional.

they can without tivo, the morning after, networks know what people were watching, when they flipped, when they flipped back, all with a high degree of accuracy.
that's why i find it odd that they still base ad rates on ratings periods when programming is hyper. because advertisers know the mainstream "morning after" data as well.

They only know this for certain people who are randomly selected and agree to have a special box hooked up to their TV. Based on the small sample size, the viewing habits of the nation can then be figured out.
On the privacy issue, who really cares if the TV companies know what you watch?
Cable companies like Warner who have their DVR capability integrated into cable boxes.
Sony just announced the PSX and theres a conspicious absence of any mention of Tivo. Their Cocoon DVR/Wonderbox in Japan does not use Tivo.
Tivo can only survive with $300 lifetime plans and using "methods" of gaining revenue like this? That does not bode well for their future.
I'll buy a Tivo if I must but I will always look to ditch them for the next "Bigger Better Deal".

Doesn't really matter. Tivo is probably dead in 5 years or they will be relagated to 2 tier status. Who will take over.

my big hold up with tivo is what happens to my "lifetime" plan when tivo croaks. or if someone usurps them which is more likely.
in fact replay tv's parent company did in fact file bankruptcy, but replay has been spun off (sold) to the company that owns marantz and denon.

Exactly! Both companies are small and prone to being taken over if not replaced on the whole if their patents don't hold up. One failsafe would have been basic VCR transport controls but I assume the companies feel that that would hurt monthly service.

ugh, y'know, i used to think the same thing. even for other matters, such as "i don't do anything illegal, so i don't care if someone is video taping my every move." makes sense in a way, but picking my nose while i walk through the park isn't illegal either, but it doesn't mean i want someone putting that on video, either.
anyway, that's a rant for another thread...

FYI, Sony does use TiVo technology in their Cocoon products.
Will TiVo be out of business in 5 years? Who knows, but naysayers have been declaring the same thing about Apple for, oh, going on 20 years now...

that's not the point, you take that risk buying any product, but most products still function if the company that makes them disappears.
people still drive studebakers.
tivo is a service. tied to a piece of hardware, that depends on the service to work.
