The designers of the Palm OS left the company to form Handspring.

hmmm, i am torn as to whether this is a good or bad thing.

handspring seemed to be willing to focus their product line (even if it is on the "everything-but-kitchen-sink" treo models), whereas palm can't seem to figure out what "focus" even means. i posted a thread once that counted up all of the different shipping lines of palm branded pda's, and i think i got close to a dozen.

When Palm OS 6 comes out (this summer, apparently) it will become obvious.

HS was really hurting. I'm sure it's great news for them and their shareholders.

Yay! I love monopolies. OK, so I guess Pocket PC is a competetor for palm, but they seem to be for two different market share areas. Handspring really led the way in competition and R&D... I'm afraid this merger will slow some of that down - even though Handspring has been struggling for the past year and a half.

That certainly seemed to be the case to me: I have been looking around to purchase my first PDA and the Sony Cliés seemed far and away the best value and the best design. Mind you I was looking at the used market: I think the Tungsten T looks pretty sweet really.

it depends what your looking for, if you want rich multimedia features clie is where its at. Palms high end just seems overpriced to me for what it does. On a side note I heard sony was/is working with palm to help make the os more robust.

Oh btw, i recently switched using my clie with my pc to my mac(w/missing sync), and it works great, no problems at all.

Ah, yes, Sony. I forgot about them... They certainly do hold the advantage - over all competition.

I was going from what I remembered when I worked retail (at Staples in electronics) two years ago... we didn't carry Sony at the time, and so I never really thought of them as a Palm OS brand.

Of course, now that you bring them up, I do remember lusting after some of their models... even teh ones we didn't carry. Now that I'm out of retail, I'm much more disconnected from the tech world.

Palms don't hold a candle to Pocket PCs and I say that as I vomit. Sony Clies are close but no cigar, especially when you start talking price. Pocket PCs used to be more expensive now they're less. Maybe this merger will fix some of these Palm problems. Of course all PDAs are too expensive for me! More than $50 for an organizer is kind of stupid. I would buy a $50 Zire immediately though.
