Airport Extreme Troubleshooting
Just a heads up for people who are having difficulties with Airport Extreme. I was attempting to troubleshoot an iBook running OS 9.2.2 trying to use Airport Extreme, and he could see other machines and printers on AppleTalk sporadically, but could not get on the internet. After about twenty minutes of thinking and trying things, the owner of the iBook mentioned he had AppleCare, so he insisted on calling them up and getting his money's worth.
Two hours later, it worked. Here's what the gentleman at AppleCare had us do:
1. Check to make sure the connection from the Airport Base Station to the jack is not having any difficulties. Plug ethernet cable into iBook from jack.
2. Leave the ethernet cable attached to the iBook. Go to Apple Menu>Control Panels>AppleTalk. Make sure Ethernet (built-in) is selected.
3. Go to Apple Menu>Control Panels>TCP/IP. Make sure Ethernet is selected and not Airport. Configure it to DHCP.
4. Check to see if your are able to get on the network/internet. If unsuccessful, restart machine and try again. If you still have been unsuccessful, switch ethernet chords. If still unsuccessful, most likely bad port.
5. If you are able to get on the network, unplug ethernet cable from iBook, plug it back into Airport Base Station, unplug the power to the Base Station.
6. Go to Applications>Apple Extras>Airport Setup Assistant. Go through the assistant, check all things appropriate.
7. Restart machine, hold down Command+Option+O+F. Once the Open Firmware screen comes up, type in "reset-all" (without the quotations).
8. This will restart the machine. Hold down Command+Option+P+R until the machine has restarted FOUR times.
9. Open Sherlock, find the following items and delete them: AppleTalk Preferences, Modem Preferences, Remote Access Preferences, TCP/IP Preferences.
10. Restart machine. Go to Apple Menu>Control Panels>AppleTalk, select Airport.
11. Go to Apple Menu>Control Panels>TCP/IP, select Airport, configure to DHCP.
12. Plug in Airport Extreme Base Station. Once started up, reset the station (for those who do not know how to do this, it's the small white button on the far left of the back of the station). Hold the reset button for five seconds. Note: you will need a paperclip/pen small pointy object to be able to do this.
13. Restart machine. Attempt to get on network/internet. If unsuccessful, run through Airport Setup Assistant, check all things appropriate. Reset Airport Extreme Base Station by holding the reset button for 20 seconds.
14. Restart machine. Attempt to get on network/internet. If unsuccessful, run through Airport Setup Assistant, check all things appropriate. Double check AppleTalk settings and TCP/IP settings (steps 10-11). Reset Airport Extreme Base Station by holding the reset button for 40 seconds.
15. Restart machine. Attempt to get on network/internet (worked for us!).
If you are still having difficulties, it might be worth taking to someone you know or your friendly Apple retailer and their genius bar! Hope this helps some of you out there.
