Okay, No. Someone should, I some AP photographers in the field use a Sony product of some sort, USB2 connection. From what I hear it has a direct satellite link back to their photo editors, so they can have an image they shot going out on the AP wires within 2 minutes.
There are other external hard drives made for saving oictures in the field, but the iPod is not one of them. The digital wallet by minds at work should fulfill the job. Look here: http://www.dcresource.com/specials/DigitalWallet/
I think if apple wanted to, they could allow the ipod to be used for dumping images off of a digital camera. All of the hardware is there, i think it would just take a firmware update. The only problem is that digital cameras are made by many different companies, so it would not be easy for apple to impliment this feature.
With the prices of memory cards declining, i don't know if apple will put the time and money towards adding this feature to the ipod.

actually, it seems pretty easy since Mac OS X treats most digital cameras as if they were standalone removable media readers. that's why so many cameras are supported by iPhoto. technically, apple could just take that code, port it over for the iPod, and make a special cable adapter for the iPod.
now that i think about it, it seems like a good idea...
Hmm, looked over the article, but the wire there didn't seem favorable for the ruggedness of the device. I'd want something that I was sure could take a few licks.
