IBM is launching 80GB notebook drives in January, and 7200rpm drives in the 1st quarter...no word on capacities for the 7200rpm drives yet, though I expect they will be on the large side.

Wow. Were do I get in line? More importantly, how soon before the 5400 rpm, 60GB drives drop in price? I wouldn't mind the extra space in my iBook.

yeah double wow. This is looking really good now for notebooks in the future. The hard drive was one of the limiting factors in performance for notebooks compared to their desktop counterparts. Pretty soon we may see performance equal or near desktop speeds for notebooks. Can't wait until we see them in Powerbooks in the future.

This also makes me feel better about getting the 60GB HD for my new TiBook. I can just throw in the old drive in a FW case and get a new 7200 RPM drive.

I wonder if these notebook drives will be ATA 100/133 capabale? Or serial ATA? I would like to see these two things in notebooks as well.

I suppose that will only start becoming issues as we get in danger of actually saturating the bandwidth.

...and we had better all hope that Apple develops a better battery. I think the reason the dumped the 5400rpm drive was due to battery life, wasn't it?

Cool... Now I can have an 80GB MP3 player.

The Neo Jukebox may not be as cool as the iPod, but it kicks its ass on Disc space. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />

Cost, I suspect--I have a 5400, and a 4200 before that, and saw no real difference in real world battery times.
