Is there anyway in OS X to merge a partition? I have a 20 gig drive that is split into a 6 gig and a 14 gig partition. Can I combine them back into 1 20 gig partition WITHOUT formatting or losing data?
it is possible, but its very dangerous. you have a very strong risk of nixing all your data. if u have sufficient backups, and are feeling kind of frisky, you can 'man pdisk'* and read about it. i did it once, but i dont remember the commands, or specifics.
*i'm pretty sure its pdisk, but it might have been fdisk, and it could also have been some version of either program that isn't distributed by Apple.
Yes it is pdisk, fdisk is the name of the DOS and Linux versions. I would not recommend trying it unless you have all your important data backed up, and for how confusing and complicated some of the pdisk commands can get you might as well just reformat and repartition (if you have your data backed up) to save your self the frustration.
