All the stuffs are near to be available.
Indeed, softwares needs a little adaptation for the iPad.
HandWriting recognition are known from Apple Newton Technologies. Porting is not very hard.
Appleworks, Home Page, Quicktime, iTune, Preview, IOKit for Firewire are available on MacOS X.
iPAD suite come from a third party not known a this time and already developped on MacOS X. Software are also available for laptops and desktops without developpment.
All the stuffs as GSM, GPS, Audio and Video adaptors and drivers are left to Third party developpersas a good challenge.
The big news are Aqua Terminal adaptor available on both traditional Apple products and others platforms. Aqua Terminal server is available on MacOS X and Terminal Adaptor is developped for Wintel and various Unix. The Aqua layer is a framework available as librairies on NT Kernel and Unix kernel level.
AquaX librairies are also near to be completed by the Apple Darwin team with a third party developper (perhaps Tenon or White Pine). The librairies are in Final stage.
Be different. Apple is the only computer society today marketing a MP3 player so called iPOD. The digital hub arrived....

How would this hypothetical thing keep from overheating?

Apparently these specs have been seen on other boards. Never-the-less this is an interesting product. If it could be pulled off at these price points it would be an intersting addition to Apple's line. The Quicktime features could be an interesting digital hub addition.

As much as I would LOVE this kind of device, what kind of world are you living in!? This is supposed to be some sort of handheld device, right?? Just the hard drive itself almost makes this an impossibility. One of the reasons why I bought my Visor Deluxe in the first place was because it would fit in my pocket.
Now, if this should be the case, big time KUDOS to the development team. But somehow I am thinking that this is more pipe dream than reality.
--------------------------
I thought I would do some conversions for the dimensions he posted...
Height: 112 mm = 4.409 in.
Width: 71.8 mm = 2.827 in.
Depth: 19.9 mm = 0.784 in.
Weight: 202 g = 7.125 oz.
Does this seem at all plausable??

Well, acording to your coversions, this is smaller than my Visor Edge, so I don't see where you think it's too big to fit in your pocket. But then again, I don't know what kind of world you live in.

If this is 'official' info and not just some wishful thinking, the fact that Mpeg3 is mentioned is a giveaway that this is BS. There is no such thing as mpeg 3. It was ditched. MP3 is Mpeg1 layer 3.
Otherwise, bring it on... would be very cool. Although not very sure what niche it would fill... except as replacement for iPod.
Er...Mike, its the same hard drive as the iPod.
