Tidbit from MacOSRumors?

"We have much, much more of this sort of information to dispense in the weeks ahead; in the mean time, next up on our agenda is much discussion of forthcoming Digital Lifestyle devices including Apple's efforts to introduce DLD's for Pictures and Movies -- a Photo Frame smart display in the 10-12 inch range, and a DVD-R/QuickTime-based DLD designed to work with TVs and HDTVs based around the iPod hardware platform....stay tuned!"

What does everyone think of the next iPod integrating video? I think it would be kickass to play video or photo slideshows in addition to the music. Maybe it'll also function like a VCR when jacked into a TV or Mac. (or it can communicate with companies like Phillips) I keep thinking about Quicktime 6's support of MPEG-4 for some reason.

As for digital picture frames. If they're similiar to the ones I've seen from Sony, I'd be hardpressed to say I'm interested.

It has been said before and it will likely be said again MacOSRumors just makes up around 95% of what is on their pages.

That said I still can't understand why people want the iPod to display movies or photos. I really just can't see the point but that's me for you.

I think the ability to record audio would be a more logical feature to add to this audio device than video, images, or other non-audio stuff.

Agreed, having a iPod record through a standard audio mini-jack would be a great feature. And it's not as if it's impossible to do, since MiniDisks do it no problem (ie there's a codec involved in both processes).

....how 'bout a soft-shelled iPod shaped like Steve? Could double as a voodoo doll....

Why'd you suppose they made the iPod operable with one hand?

I can't understand why people want an iPod to play music. Especially TODAY'S music!

Maybe you might take that digital camera and offload your pics right onto your iPod... Or even your digital camcorder.

    Enhanced PDA functions?

There are lots of reasons, check out this:

Add a 20gb hard drive, charge just under a grand and you have a portable audio/video device. You couldn't archive all of your dvds, but probably a few for the road

The basic thing with the Digital devices is that they will never do something that you can't do with your Mac.

They are supposed to use it as a hub to get/put data of whatever format.

Case in point the iPod, built to sync Music with one Mac not be a transport device to move it between machines, built to read contacts and diary info not really enter it.

Also Apple will only enter a market that they can get a solid position in. Music was lacking such a refined device, but video/pictures?...there are plenty of good cameras about cheaper then apple could ever make them. same with PDA's...now Phones is another issue, although there a a lot out there, very few have much style or ease of use...my bet is for a collaboration with Sony-Ericcson for a good phone with PDA functions a large screen and a darwin kernel to the OS with a non-transparent take on Aqua optimized for small screens, it'll sync only to the Mac at first, PC's later.

    OK Flame on!

Oh and MOSR are totally fiction-merchants

MOSR are full of BS, sure, but what about AI? It doesn't seem to bother anyone that AI's predictions are pulled from someone's arse.

I don't understand why everyone singles out MOSR when AI is just as bad and MUCH less entertaining.

Reading MOSR is all about entertainment. I find it amusing enough to keep going back.

Did you mean that the iPod is going to be bigger, USB based, uglier and Windows-only?

I guess you meant the FM and recording functions, though.

<a href="http://macnews.net.tc"; target="_blank">http://macnews.net.tc</a>; has some more info on the next iPod upgrade round. (Shameless plug, I know.)

I have to say that I find the AI forums just as entertaining as MOSR, if not more so. A rumour I read once about how Apple's been secretly finding a way to accelerate the speed of the system's response to mouse clicks on OS X was to me about as good as MOSR's rumour of the the Icosahedral Power Mac G4

(Which they said they got from someone at a Christmas office party, IIRC).

And at least AI made me see that not everyone bought into MOSR's reports on the "7470".

The Nuevo only comes with Windows software now, but it's architecture is completely open, documented and based on standards (USB, XML etc.) so it will be much easier for people to build clients for any OS and exploit the full capabilities of the device. That's what they say on slashdot, anyway.

    btw do you believe macnews.net.tc?

The announcment date is my Birthday and I'd be happy to wait for another round of bug fixes and minor improvements (maybe OGG support?) but the only 'feature' they mention is a battery draining color screen.

When the iPod was announced with a simple B+W display, it was a clue that it had been 'engineered', not built from a marketing checklist.

MOSR is idiotic. Email them with something credible-sounding, and they will post it. Don't even bother to check their sources.

I guess I shouldn't say them, since it is the work of one man, Ryan Meader.

ThinkSecret is a much better site, though it's rumors are usually about software, not hardware. Not that they haven't been (mostly) spot-on about hardware updates, it's just that you don't see news about that as often as you see news of software.

    I haven't been to MOSR.com forever...
