Why DDR 400?

I've read on more than a few FH threads about the idea of Apple using DDR 400 on the next version of the Power Mac motherboard. But I've been given the idea from some people here that DDR 400 would make a less than appealing choice for designing a system.

So I'd like to ask some of the people in the know here just what exactly the problem is with DDR 400. I know that the fact that it's not a "JEDEC" standard, but how is that problematic? And why would Apple be motivated to use DDR 400?

And finally, is there a possible, better alternative?

Sorry for asking so many questions, but I haven't been able to find the posts I've been looking for on the AI search page.

Dual Channel DDR 400 supports 6.4Gbps throughput. Lack of JEDEC hasn't stopped it from being usefull. Apple could have used RAMBUS but who wants to do that?
