No OS9 in Jan = new hardware? Not really

See today's episode of AtAT. Apparently you'll still be able to boot from CD. Their take is that this means "OSX only" is merely an artificially imposed restriction and doesn't point to any [significant] new hardware.

Are they right?

Even if Jan'03 Macs were completely unable to boot any OS 9 (CD or HD located), I would not expected radically new hardware at that time. I think this is going to happen later in the year (2003) and most probably in Powermacs only. iMacs and the rest should follow in 2004.

I think that is what they are doing, and it may be a market necessity, but it sucks rocks.
