New Mac -Nothing works!

I got my first new mac today, a crt 400mhz iMac, I'm very excited but after a day's worth of tinkering I've sadly found that not much works. I first booted into OS9, and things seemed to work at first, the internet for one, but then I booted into OSX and nothing worked. Not even internet explerer opened, telling me that it could not run on my system, and such was the case for nearly every other program on OSX I attempted. I booted back into OS9 and the internet is now gone - I use ethernet that goes from a pc, with cable, to the mac, an it did work once in that beginning, and it always works on the other laptop pc I have.

Do I have to reinstall the OS? My friend has a DVD with OSX but this machine only has a cd drive.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew

    1. Run Disk Utility and make sure the file system is OK.

    2. From OS X repair permissions on your hard disk with Disk Utility.

    3. If that does not help, then the previous owner of the machine may have screwed up users and groups. You may have to reinstall OS X indeed.

I would just reinstall everything because it's not a "New" machine. It's nice to start over once and a while. Heck I reformat my drives every 4 months.8)

I'm not certain but perhaps if you powered off the iMac and restarted it then the PC will recognize it properly. Also, you don't say which version of X is installed. It is possible it is a very old version. It would cooperate with the PC more nicely under OS X if it was running 10.2.6.

I would delete everything and install os X. I have a 233mhz 128mb 4gb imac the first imac model in 1998. I have had no problems after using os x but when i had os 9 it sucked.

Open Apple System Profiler and tell us how much Ram you have. OSX not launching apps makes it sound like maybe the person who sold it pilfered the ram and put like 32MB in it.

    nuke it...

    (wipe and reinstall)

I do it once a year, I rather not spend time defragging either (personal preference).

    enjoy
