who needs the G5?

Not an antagonistic post. Just wondering who has a need for the G5's. Students (even PhD Comp Sci students at MIT), anyone doing digital video outside of Pixar, and graphic artists who don't usually run 45 photoshop filers at once need not reply. 10.3 looks very necessary, simply for the Finder rewrite, but who on earth actually NEEDS (not just wants)the G5? Is the target market for this machine Pixar, DNA analysis labs, and professional audio labs.

My point is that the old pro macs sucked because of 10.2 and the G4. With panther coming irregardless, was all the whiz bang stuff in the G5 necessary? Why not offer the G5 with the same features of the G4? Was PC2700 ram THAT slow? 8x AGP...show me a graphics card that was throttled by 4x! Serial ATA? Give me a break! Hypertransport is cool, but again it has to come to the rest of the product line eventually...is apple going to jack up prices again when that happens?

Moreover, how does a G5 (which is cheaper to make than a G4), coupled with 8x AGP, incrementally faster RAM, hypertransport, serial ATA and a new case amount to a $500 INCREASE? I'm tired of people acting like minor hardware advancements (with exceptions of course to hypertransport) are worthy of huge price increases. That isn't how the computer world works. Technology advances and prices have historically gone down...NOT up. I get the feeling apple is just ripping people off, and to make matters worse, apple's installed base seems to ruthlessly beat down anyone who says otherwise.

    honkeylips,

Go to Dell's website. Configure a Dual 3.06Ghz Xeon with all other features on par with Apple's $3,000 Dual 2Ghz G5. Then, shattup and stop trying to start silly arguments about who needs what in a computer. If you don't need it, don't buy it. Some people do need all those wiz bang features, and $3,000 is the perfect price for what you get in the dual 2Ghz G5. It's not like you were planning to buy a Powermac anyway.

Here, I saved you the trouble and configured Dell's Precision Workstation 450 with Dual 3.06Ghz Xeon's, and put all the other features as close to Apple's Dual 2Ghz as I could, many of which the Dell fell short on, and the Dell costs $4,081. You've got nothing to bitch about, my friend.

Although G5 per unit price might be lower, you have to reward R&D with up-front recovery. New technology always comes at a premium and then the price declines and then the next new thing comes along. (repeat as necessary)

If apple was selling the G5 on slim margins right at the time of its introduction, then there would be no money to develop the G6, etc..

Argue what you will about the comparative price of Macs vs. PCs, you can't fault Apple for charging a premium to early adopters. People who can use the new technology now will pay the premium. Others will grab the discounted dual G4s and be happy about that.

If Apple has overpriced the units, they'll know soon enough.

I edited my above post to include Dell's costs for a similar machine. I don't think there's anything left to discuss here.

And since my final point has been proved, the one about apple maniacs beating down anyone who disagrees with anything apple does, I'll just come out and say it. The G5's are ugly and most of the people who will buy them are losers who only want to prove to all their idiot friends they can max out their credit card first! And I think 10.3 is going to SUCK. Yeah that's right, I think it's going to suck because all X is about is fancy FX, stupid crap that people never use (inkwell, rendezvous, netboot, Unix shell...) and technologies that don't deliver (Too Quartz Too Extreme, sherlock, isync..) So have fun going broke and deluding yourself.

that's what happens when you mess with a honkey

Ouch. I feel the burn. How could I have been so blind? To think that Apple could create an innovative operating system and great hardware is simply ridiculous.

    Honkylips, you have enlightened me.

    I need a G5. I've missed deadlines because of the G4.

well dfryer I'm glad I've enlightened you! It is rediculous to think of apples OS or hardware as innovative isn't it? I'm glad you finally see the light. Now if everyone else would only follow your truthful path.

Apple is market skimming (partially to pay off R&D I assume), nothing surprising to me there. Bottom line, they're a company to make profit... so why not charge $2000 for the entry level if people are willing to pay for it? I get the feeling that most pros who have been itching for a G5 will just get the Dual 2GHz, and the Single 1.6/1.8 will be for whoever *thinks* they need a G5, or just wants a new processor that will last them several years.

Sidenote - the Superdrive accounts for $200 of that $500 jump from prices between low-end then and now. is $300 worth the rest of what you described above? Doubtful, but that's the premium you pay to be an early adopter.

My God...MCQ actually has his brain still attached! Congrats man.

Aside from my venting I really wish apple would release a consumer tower and get back to the fundamentals with their OS design. Oh well...I guess I should be able to find a good deal on a G4 tower on ebay. That won't make X any different tho.

We have some applications at work that could use G5 stations along with a large Xserve racks. Even now we are looking to move off of the alphas (just got a new 8 way alpha in, SN 004) and to something cheaper in terms of license fees and flexible in terms of not VMS.

Nomos is moving to OS X and needs all the same power we do.

Engineers and research workers etc... If you want to develop paper making machine or ADSL modem or base transceiver station etc... you need a lot of computer power, when you are working with huge designs. Now there is enough power and memory to make simulations. There is market for high end workstations. OS X just needs more software.

It costs a lot of money to make totally new machine. Case, motherboard, processor etc... New technology always costs more... New machines aren't for students or home users. New machines are for people who needs latest and fastest computers to do their daily work. G4 1.25GHz is still available for lower price.
