$3000 for $2000 worth of hardware
I just went on Apple's Website to look at the prices of the new G5 Macs. US$3000.00 is a lot for about $2000.00 worth of computer equipment. I went to www.pricewatch.com looked up hardware prices to make a comparable dual chip AMD Athlon 2800MP System. Here is the prices that I came up with. Mid-Tower ATX Case $100.00, 1.44 Floppy $20.00, DVD-R/RW Drive $250.00, Mainboard w/2 2800MP $800.00, 2 512MB PC2100 DDR ECC REG $200.00, ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Ultra 128mb DDR $200.00, SATA Controller $50.00, 56k Modem $10.00, 2 120gb SATA Harddrives $250.00, Keyboard/Mouse $30.00 for the OS I would run Redhat Linux and it's free. The computer that I listed above would toast a new G5 Mac. Last weekend I bought 512MB DDR400 PC3200 for $60.00 at Fry's Electronics. AMD doesn't have any MP Proccessors that are up to 400Mhz bus speeds yet. In the hardware prices Apple is cornholeing their users. At least Apple is doing something right using a unix based operating system.

An AMD Athlon would never toast a G5. The G5 toasts a PIV 3.06 GHz and the PIV toasts any Athlon availible.
Does the Athlon have a 1GHZ FSB? No.
Does the Athlon have 400 MHZ DDR (dual bank, 8 slots)? No.
Does the Athlon have AGP 8x Pro (more power)? No.
Does the Athlon have Gigabit Ethernet? No.
Does the Athlon have PCI-X? No.
Is the Athlon 64 bits? No.
Does the Athlon run OS X? No (maybe not yet?).
Does your thread have a reason to exist? No.
Am I hard? Yes.
Do I expose myself to warning/ban? I suppose so.

No, cause Dell doesn't sell Athlon computers

EWW Dell is crap. Build a computer yourself

sure it would, take off the heat sink/active cooling system/slab of dry ice from the Athlon, strap on the G5, start it up, and it'll do it. Don't worry though, it's not a one sided relationship, the G5 is happy to return the favor.
Second, your price is based on a box you'd build yourself.
Third, you haven't factored in tax and shipping.
Fourth, what the hell would YOU do with a box running linux? Surf the web? check email? These hardly require an 800mhz box.

I'm willing to bet that it can be done, so why don't you 'build' us a computer that beats the dual G5?

My current computer has a AGP 8x Pro Slot, I have 1 Gb of PC3200 RAM, and if I wanted to I could go buy a Gigabit NIC Adapter. And yes I can run BSD on my computer and download Apple's GUI for BSD to make my computer look like a Mac. Athlons are internally 64bit. I can watch TV on my computer (TV Turner Card $50 at Fry's Electronics)can you? What is so good of a 1Ghz FSB if the computer can only use 400Mhz DDR RAM? Are there any PCI-X Interface Cards out on the market other than SCSI Controllers?

Athlons 64bit won't be coming out till november, but you'll have to use linux. the second suckiest OS on the planet (basically what windows stole from mac, linux stole from unix)

This one?
MSI K7D Master-L - AMD® 762, 200/266MHz, DDR, 1 AGP PRO, 5 PCI, Audio, LAN, ATX. $806
No optical audio. ($23)
No Firewire 800 (No Firewire) (FW: $10; FW800 not available at PW)

And then there are all the other things that make the Mac better, i.e. better case, better integration, better reliability, better software, better build-quality.
But if you're going to play Quake and download porn then by all means get the PC.
how about this one

or I could buy about 100 cheap $400 PCs and build a Linux Beowulf Cluster...would a G5 Mac keep up with that? hehehe

I don't know what you're smok'n, sides price any computer from a manufacturer and compare it to what you get when you make yourself and um duh its going to be more expensive. Do the math and do it on any PC manufacturer with the same features and tell us how much it costs....

Oh man yer stupid.
i will never, ever build my own computer. i don't want or need to know how. i make a nice living based off what i do on a mac, and while it does require me to open 'er up once in a while, i have never ever had to create any computer from scratch to do what i need to do. my time is a valuable commodity these days, whereas yours varies directly with, apparently, the high school academic year. so that kills that point. people like you build your own computers. whoopee. i don't. and i'll pay for that convenience.
and of course, support. if windows 2000 or xp or whatever goes bonkers on your system, or a game brings it to a screeching halt, who do you call? microsoft, and explain the 80 different components in your computer, only to be told to try restarting? maybe get on a message board and experience the "tower of babel" effect when everyone and their mother gives you advice, but absolutely jack sh*t of it applies to you. apple controlling the "whole widget" is a major advantage, AND i can get more effective info from a smaller group who i KNOW are using the same hardware set up as me, which drastically decreases my toubleshooting time and getting back to business.
now, this was alluded to before, but what do you plan to DO with your computer. i still stand by this one point: many people can build computers or clusters with operating systems to do particular tasks, such as rendering, or video editing, or file serving, or just web design and correspondence. whereas any mac i put on my desk can do ALL OF IT (edit: some of them better than others, granted...). get that? let me reiterate: my computer isn't an "all-in-one," it's an EVERYTHING-IN-ONE. it's the Humvee that can go to the grocery store as necessary, but can still tow a massive paylod and offload troops at the front lines. (edit: additonal point -- when you said, for example, "or I could buy about 100 cheap $400 PCs and build a Linux Beowulf Cluster...would a G5 Mac keep up with that? hehehe," well, in what? dna decoding? let's say it would hand the g5 it's ass. but could i run dreamweaver and office and photoshop on any of those $400 PCs while that was going on in the background? NOT ON YOUR LIFE. that's VERSATILITY, and the mac still owns that market... period. the mac isn't a "task in a box," it's every possible task - 3d, 2d, video, business admin, music -- yeah, forgot to mention mac now owns the high-end music market with emagic - in that same friggin' box.
and before you start equating versatility with number of titles, let's counter it with the age old "out of the hundred million titles on the shelves at compusa, how many do you actually use?" i will concede games. maybe someday it'll be as easy to code (edit: code for games, or porting over... i'm not a programmer, so excuse the bastardization of terminology there) for the mac as the pc, but not yet. but now look at what you use. is it available ont he mac? often times, the answer is yes. if it's not, is there another alternative available through a vendor websote that doesn't stock shelves at the compusa? usually, yes. and thankfully, it looks like even heavy hitters like autocad will be coming over shortly (well, if you believe the rumors over at thinksecret.com).
anyway, i could go on, but it's late, and i'm hittin' the sack. if you haven't been flamed off the boards or banned outright by sunrise, i'll see ya around.
