I was posting a reply to another thead.... when the screen dimmed and a dialog box came up saying I had to restart. It was in four different languages.
Your description fits the one I had a while ago. I assume that's what it was. I had just installed the Kensington StudioMouse, so I figured it was a problem with the driver.
OK.. I think when it happened there was unix code or something scrolling on the screen... It was on my machine at home. I'm at work now and will tell the mac tech guy what happened.
yeah, the scrolling code across your screen is also a kernel panic. this "nice" version is what's supposed to happen instead of that. I guess somehow it was bypassed the last time. Check out any software that installed stuff in your System folder. My Kensington software did it to me. Norton and the MS mouse software are frequent causes too.
I've never seen an OS X machine have a kernel panic, and I almost regret it. Have never watched it happen in person..and thus been able to admire how much more classy it is, if just as damaging, as a Windows/Linux KP.

Oh man, what's up with your machines? We have kernel panics on the SGIs at work a couple times a week.... we call the engineers and tell them the computers are dumping kernels again. .......... I guess you gotta be there.
My machine tends to get panicky after I install something new onto the system (I mostly just install new system software through the Software Update in System Preferences). I've happily found that running disk permissions in the disk utility does the trick. Try it out. I'd also reboot from your system disk and run Disk First Aid to make sure you clean whatever you can. Good luck.
Weird. I'm loading new software all the time, and I think I've seen a kernel panic maybe once. Think it happened once when I unplugged USB cable from Sound Sticks.
Kernel panics should not be happening on a regular basis -- either your permissions need to be fixed, you have a load of buggy kexts, or your system is just plain borked.
I hate when I hear people tell me that, cuz my OS has been like this since I got the machine. Why me?!? It's a Dual 1 G. Don't know. I do run os9 a lot to run old versions of programs. Maybe that contributes to the problem? Wish I had the answers. But the machine is great otherwise. Just need to treat it with a little more care than most(?) other OSX users.
i used to have kernel panic's all the time then i removed a third party piece of hardware and it all stopped from there. gone on several months without the smallest problem. i think its caused by a poorly written program or poorly written drivers for hardware

reformat your drive and start over

What was it that you removed?
