Does anyone know a way to create a partition for linux without destroying data on a HD using free tools ?
copy your hd on a second drive with Carbon Copy Cloner(VT)
partition you first drive.
play back your data.
sorry, afaik, you CAN'T partition a hd in use afterwards when you use a unix based system, 'cause the filesystem is so complex (=widespreaded around the drive), you would destroy any data by partitioning it.- :-(
BTW, while, say, Gentoo linux is rad, I recommend n00bs use Yellow Dog Linux. Easy to install, supports all your hardware right out of the box. It's rpm based. While in time you will learn to curse and shake your fist at the RPM, for a beginner, the (initial) convenience and having YDL do the thinking for you will help you learn linux, and get it up and running right away.

appears to be the solution to your predicament.
