Well it look the 970 PowerMac will not be available until late 2003. So there will be one update before the 970 Powermacs.
So here is the question. When will be the next update and what will apple do to make us buy a G4 PowerMac in the next 10 months?
Comments
Mhz? 1.2-1.4 or 1.2-1.6 OR, pansy scenario, dual 1 gig to 1.4 by next March.
Scary me sez...no 'power'Mac update until after San Fran'...late Feb' to March instead.
All duals? I think that will depend on mhz. But I'd still say...all duals if mhz sucks.
1.8 gig single processor? Next march? Outside bet.
Still on crap pseudo bus/memory?
G4? Still not buying it. It's yesterday's tech'.
Lemon Bon Bon
I'll get one to hold me over for the second generations of the 970 or the 7457RM, whichever it may be for the price and needs that I have.

yesterday's? I wish! more like tech of 1999/2000
If so, it's a nice - and with ATA drives, cheap - way to boost speed, especially under load. HDDs are glacial next to the RAM and the CPU, so any help they get is welcome.
This has been offered as one of the reasons why the next PowerMacs won't boot into 9: OS 9 can't boot off this kind of RAID. It would still allow them to boot into 9 from a CD, however. So in that sense, it jibes with the rumors.
What does this all mean for the top end PM's? I would hope for a good speed boost, but there are rumours that it will be a dismal one. Possibly Quads, but that would decrease the number of available chips, dosnt do anything to solve the FSB bandwidth problem of the current chips.
I personally think that there is going to be a decent to outstanding anouncement on the PM's in the first quarter, followed up by a Sept release of the 970 models. I wouldnt be supprised if Apple released Quads by the end of 03 either.
(i.e., two disks on two ATA channels) standard PowerMacs.

Don't the G4s have dual channel already? They have one bus for the main disk, and another for the opticals.
Anyway, here's the 100% ***Confirmed*** spec on the next pro machine that Apple release:
Â*Â*Â*Â*Apple logo: right on the front
I give you that titbit as my contribution to the cause. Although, it is possible that my source could be pulling my leg on this one.

****CONFIRMED!!!!!***** I have it on good authority that the Apple logo will, indeed, be on the case.

Actually, they have three: An ATA/100 channel, an ATA/66 channel (for Mac OS 9, which doesn't grok ATA/100), and an ATA/33 channel for the opticals.
I'm thinking that Apple will move to 2x ATA/100 or 2x ATA/133 and 1x ATA/33 (for the opticals), and offer 2 HDDs as a factory internal RAID.
I'm still hoping for the Dual 1.4 GHz, 167 Mhz FSB with true DDR. After all, the rumour_mills said we would have it at MWNY 2001.

this won't happen. the G4 - the 7457 (not RM) - will not have TRUE DDR... so there will be a 1.4Ghz or perhaps 1.6Ghz but no TRUE DDR and no 1.8Ghz (cause this will come with the 970). for me this is a dissapointment and i'll wait until fall next year for the 970 as will many others in here (seems so)...
i think the better thing (Lemon Bon Bon) is that there won't be a single-processor PowerMac before the 970 arrives. and i have the hopes up for dual 970 because of this scenario...
my prediction now:
1, 1.2, 1.4 Ghz --- 7457 with 200Mhz FSB and 400-not-true-DDR (perhaps the 1Ghz with 167Mhz FSB) --- all dual
a "better" one:
1.2, 1.4, 1.6 Ghz --- 7457 with 200Mhz FSB and 400-not-true-DDR (perhaps the 1.2 as 1.25 with 167Mhz FSB) --- all dual
my hopes for an early 970 are gone - therefor i think they will come after the next update in the following configurations:
1.4, 1.6, 1.8 Ghz --- 970 with 700,800,900 FSB and "i don't know yet"-RAM ;-) --- ALL DUAL!!! they are 8-10 month away but it'll be worth to wait.
the consumer line of 2004 then will be based on the 7457RM - all seems to be clear now...

Resonable prediction, I would say though that continued sale of the current 1.25 mhz dual, possibly with a few alteration to HD, optical, etc, is ***CONFIRMED*** by Apples latest statement on OS 9 boot systems. I could be futher pessamistic and predict that we will not see a 200 mhz FSB with this revision, it was just put in with the Windtunnels, and they will keep it the same for the next revision.

no i don't think so - the current board is capable of different speeds with NO changes. that's the reason why the low-end mac has 133 and the others have 167 bus - the new G4 will support a 200mhz-bus and so does the apple-board. there's no reason not to use this 'feature' ...
