Way back in the OS8 (?) days, Apple use to provide a piece of software that allowed me to access my computer at work from home.

Not sure what it was called (Remote Access?)

Is there something like this today? I think Apple Remote Desktop kind of does that but it's $299 for a 10 client package. I just need this for my one Mac at work! Is there a cheap and inexpensive solution?

thanks.

is it on a static IP? what do you need to get jus files? cuz if so just turn on remote FTP or SSH into the thing (the latter I don't know how to do on OSX).

But simply put if it had its own static IP you could essentially just FTP into it

Check out all the things listed in the Sharing control panel. There's a bunch of options, depending on what you want to do. If you just need access to your files, you can do Apple File Sharing. Or you can turn on FTP and access it via an FTP client (which lets you access it from any computer, not just another Mac). If you need to actually run programs on it, you can turn on remote login, and like satchmo said, ssh into your work computer in Terminal. Anything you can do in terminal while sitting in front of your work computer, you can do via ssh in terminal while at home. The Sharing control panel even conveniently displays the address at which you can find your computer when you turn any of these services on. Remote graphical login, the ideal solution for you, was rumored to be a feature of 10.3, but I haven't been paying attention to see if this turned out to be true.
