G5 anecdote

I go to a very well resourced photo school. As many know a good part of the photo industry has had a great love affair with Macs, hence our program is almost all Mac, the only PCs there are used as stereos.

We just hosted a photo educators workshop where an apple reseller was present with a G5 and a top of the line Dell. The demo setup was a PhotoShop test using multiple filters, both computers were set on a macro program handling the execution of the set to begin at the exact same time. By the time the Dell had opened the file the G5 had already opened the file, applied the filter set, and saved the file.

Do the Macs at your school have iTunes? You could eliminate the rest of those PCs.

Nope, No iTunes, if it's not work related it is deleted by server administrators.

Shouldn't they 'delete' the PCs then?

Odd. Where I come from, music is considered an integral part to getting work done.

Sorry, I must've slipped in after the specs were given. I wasn't supposed to be in there. It was for educators only. I was shooed out shortly after.

Yeah there's nothing better than working on a photo spread with a beautiful model servicing me to the rhythm of iTunes.

Doesn't "opening a file" come down to loading it from the HD into the RAM? Maybe they fitted the dell with a 4200 rpm drive, and the G5 with a 10.000 rpm one. Or then again, maybe the G5's really ARE better.

A Dell / G5 comparison 'opening photoshop' would be good!
