Ligatures in browsers

I downloaded Opera, and I noticed that it displays ligatures, which Safari or Camino do not. I didn't notice any setting for ligatures available in the applications' preferences.

I find that quite intriguing.

Does anyone know the underlying hows and whys of it?



N.B.: Not all ligatures are displayed, ?fi? and ?ff? do, ?st? does not.
