I went to the apple store online to see if the price had gone down on the G4s. What I found was that I could only get G4s at 1.25 GHz. Is this a typo, a mistake or maybe a sign of new G4s to come?

Those things should still be hundreds cheaper than they are. Our family is looking at getting a new Mac but it'll have to be the soon updated iMac rather than blowout PowerMac G4 because, well, that's not a blowout at 1,299. Maybe at $999. Because remember they don't have FW800 or anything as they're the old models. Curious, I wonder where those 1.42s are going?

I wonder if Motorola's wondering that, too.

    Wow! I can't find a 1.42 G4 at any reseller's site.

A friend of mine was waiting for the G5's to be announced so he could scoop up a dual 1.42 cheap. But he can't find one, and with only a $300 price reduction compared to a new dual 2gig G5 (and all that comes with it) he wouldn't have bought one now anyway.

Since Apple knew the 1.42 G4's were a VERY temporary stop gap high-end model, they must have monitored production closely to make sure they had just enough to cover the poor soles who bought one.

These G4's must have had one of the shortest life-spans before being made obsolete (at least by announcement). Is that true?

To think, I almost gave in and bought a 1.42 G4 a couple of months ago. Thank God I listened to you guys!

    The 1.42s were not overclocked.

I doubt there were many of them, and I doubt they were reasonably priced, so they're gone.

Or they are making room to upgrade the iMacs.. They still don`t trust mot. so they can upgrade their G4 tower and the iMacs at the same time?

If you go to the AppleStore an configure a dual 1,25 G4 with 256 MB RAM, 80 GB HD, Combo drive and Radeon 9000 it ends up at 1599$. Not too bad.

You're right. That's very bad! Like in that Weezer music vid...Old Guy Puppet 1:"They're not half bad." 2: "They're all bad!!"

I was hoping to scoop up a G4 tower for $999 or maybe a little more if it was a 1.42.

Well, If you are using Final Cut Pro the G5 would be noticeably better (FCP4 is awesome BTW!). Apple continues to invest aggressively in FCP, and they will no doubt leverage the G5 to make FCP a monster NLE system. It would even make sense for Apple to make FCP the first 64 bit app so that the rest of the market might follow.

If you really want to sell your G4, I would suggest sooner than later. Most "normal" people still don't know about the G5. My workplace has a very large design department, all on Macs. The designers don't care about techie stuff. In fact, I haven't found one of them that has heard about the G5 yet.

Right now your Mac is still the fastest available Mac, and it has only been available for a few months. You might be able to get a really nice price for it. When the G5's start to be delivered and reviewed, design magazines, main stream press, etc. will be full of info on the new Macs. Just Steve's claim that the G5 is the fastest personal computer in the world will drive a lot of press in the coming months/weeks.

Cubase will finally be on a par with (or better) than the PC version (I can't wait to run Halion 2 on a G5), and the optimized version of Photoshop should scream on the new models.

I would take a small loss now instead of having a very functional but already technologically obsolete computer for the next few years. Your G4 will seem very slow in a year or so.

But this is easy for me to say since I did force myself to wait for the G5 after reading these boards! I should see a nice difference over my SP 733 G4!

    Another curious development.

Not only has Apple limited slection and specs of the old PowerMac G4 but there are NO refurb deals on thier Special Deals Page, since the G5 announcement.

Could this be a prelude to an announcement in a couple of weeks in New York?
