Great News

Having a Universal Standard is important. As much as I liked Jvc's product. I was worried that the near future would have a fractured product line with incompatible formats. This is a breath of fresh air.

    This IS very cool news.

Do you suppose that this agreement is a result of all these manufacturers becoming wary of developing competing technologies and getting burned when their particular flavor is the one that doesn't survive in the consumer market?

I don't think it means that there won't continue to be technological one-upmanship though....

Not really. "Major manufacturers" agreed to Blu-Ray Discs not too long ago, and look what happened...Toshiba, NEC, Mitsubishi and a few others have decided to stand behind a competing format...

It happened with DVD-A vs. SACD and DVD-R/W vs. DVD+R/W as recently as a couple of years ago...Why do you think manufacutrers are any different today?

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony somehow convinces Canon or whoever to split off and form their own video format should they be unhappy with the direction they start going in.

Very scary Eugene. That would be the perfect Stall Tactic wouldn't it? Let's hope after the problems with DVD Recording and the eventual HD Recording these people get together on this and make it happen. I love the idea of HD recording for the consumer. Imagine an Canon HD XL3! Very nice thought.

3-4K isn't exactly consumer territory, but still, I look forward to the day when I can edit HDV on my low-end iBook without any trouble. HDV will have to sink into the 1000-1500 range before you can call it consumer technology.

It will. If you look at the work that Panasonic has done with their lineup I'm sure they will be the first to bring affordable HD recording to the masses.

    Panny 3CCD PV-GS70 $1k

    Panny 24p

    Panny MX7000- $???

Now that there's a standard on the way hopefully FCP will support it.

I really hope they can make this work and that some good in camera encoders are around by then. It'd still have about 2X the bit rate of a DVD, MPEG2 and all, and if ti had really good in camera encoding could theoretically come close to D-VHS, which is supposed to look phenomenal. MiniDV tapes are the perfect size too as they can suit a range of designs from very small, to larger pro/semi-pro gear.

Take a zero off! I'm just bitter about everything getting so out of hand pricewise. I want a DV cam and a Bluetooth phone but they both cost 5x more than I can afford for them.
