iChat (AV) can't see AIM users
[edit]
Oops. I mispelled the second guys screen name which explains a good deal of my confusion. However, there is still the first guy who I don't seem to be able to connect to.

After the keynote I thought I would check out iChat AV. I have never used instant messaging before (so I don't know if any of this would have worked for me under iChat 1.0). Anyway, I entered a friend's AIM screen name into my buddy list and he showed up as being offline (even though he was online). He doesn't use iChat by the way although he does use OSX and is on our local network. I also showed up as being offline on his client. After fooling around for a while with no luck I gave up but left iChat running.
Today another guy who works here shows up in the Rendezvous window. Turns out he is checking out iChat 1.0 (this is his first time using it). I could talk to him by starting a chat through the Rendezvous window. However, if I created a new entry in my buddy list for him that also listed him as being offline. Like my other friend he has an AIM screen name not a .mac screen name.
Next I tried dragging him from the Rendezvous window to the Buddy list window. This creates an entry in my buddy list where he shows up as being online. I now have two entries in my buddy list which appear identical (I openned up a "get info" window for each) except that one lists this person as online and one lists him as offline.
The only clue I have as to what is going on is that in iChat 1.0 there appears to be something in the Accounts preference pane which says "Enable AIM messaging" which is missing from the accounts pane in iChat 2.0. Do I need to do something to enable AIM? Any idea's what is going on here?
