Beige G3 + OS X: PRAM ZAP = death?

I have noticed that if I install OS X 10.2 on a beige G3 (internal SCSI or ATA drive, HSF+), and I ZAP the PRAM for whatever reason later, the G3 won't boot anymore. I get the "blinking ?". I run Norton, DiskWarrior, etc and they think the drive is fine, but it wont boot until I reformat from scratch!

Any ideas on how to fix this? I have seen it happen on 3 different beige G3s, ranging in specs and configs.

Is OS9 installed as well? Cuz if not, I have a feeling the mac is looking for a System Folder and not finding one. Make sure OS9 is installed, then after zapping Pram, boot OS9, choose the OSX startup disk in "Startup Disk" prefs.

Nope, OS 9 has never been on the disk. Good idea.
