Buying Advice - FireWire Hard Disk

Greetings all,

My iBook HD is a little on the small side, and so I was wondering about a FireWire drive. Obviously, having an iBook, a small bus powered drive would be nice - maybe the LaCie PocketDrive. Is this any good, and what are the alternatives for a decent price? 30Gb-60Gb would be ideal, but I'm a student with a small budget. The PocketDrive looks good, but it is a lot more expensive than the LaCie d2 drives - is it really worth the extra?

Thanks chaps.

Well, do you want a portable hd, or something that'll be used at home/desk most of the time? The D2 drives I believe are regular HD's in a firewire case and heavier, while the pocketdrives are notebook size HD's in a firewire case and lighter. The pocketdrive will have slower RPM speeds, but you get the benefit of portability. Depends on your needs.

HDs in small cases are the same as those used in laptops. Not only are they smaller and less power hungry, they are also MUCH more durable.

Notebook harddrives can take harder impacts without breaking. If you intend to use the HD in multiple locations, I highly suggest the smaller, durable kind. One drop from 3 feet could justify the slower rpms and higher price.
