Which of these manufactures makes the better Superdrive? Both of them have a drive that can write the plus and the minus format, but which will work best with my 867 MDD? Also, I notice that pioneer has a DVR-106 and a DVR-A06, what is the difference between these drives? are they the same and just market different or what?

thanks Guys

The Pioneer will work best because you know it'll be supported in iDVD if installed internally. The Sony drives have odd-sized CD tray covers/doors that not mesh well with the MDD drive bays ... and I'm not sure if they are supported by the system software.

The DVR-106 and DVR-A06 are identical for all intents and purposes pretty much.

Whatever you do DON'T get the Lacie DVD+/-R drive (part number ends in 686). It's an NEC drive and only really works with Toast, a nightmare. Better off with the Pioneer A05 or maybe the A06.

I have a Pioneer DVDr drive (v5) works a treat..

It replaced a Sony that also worked well but I had to use a patch to make it work in the finder.

Note: At this time only Toast can burn in the plus format. Nothing in Jaguar currently supports it. Word is that this will change in Panther.

There is also a strange problem with the after-market Pioneer drives where the drive sleeps (spins down) and won't wake up. This can result in anything from a disc that won't eject, a failed burn in iDVD or the worst case, a Kernal Panic when trying to access the disc. Needless to say a reboot is the only fix for it.

I've had all of these happen in my Quicksilver with the Pioneer DVR-105. You can find lots of reports of this at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com
