Pioneer or Sony
Which of these manufactures makes the better Superdrive? Both of them have a drive that can write the plus and the minus format, but which will work best with my 867 MDD? Also, I notice that pioneer has a DVR-106 and a DVR-A06, what is the difference between these drives? are they the same and just market different or what?

The DVR-106 and DVR-A06 are identical for all intents and purposes pretty much.
thanks for the info, i appreciate it.
It replaced a Sony that also worked well but I had to use a patch to make it work in the finder.

Go for the Pioneer IMHO

There is also a strange problem with the after-market Pioneer drives where the drive sleeps (spins down) and won't wake up. This can result in anything from a disc that won't eject, a failed burn in iDVD or the worst case, a Kernal Panic when trying to access the disc. Needless to say a reboot is the only fix for it.
I've had all of these happen in my Quicksilver with the Pioneer DVR-105. You can find lots of reports of this at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com
