I had to deal with that about 6 months ago. Yes, turning down the ethernet speed does work for a PC. Macs are always set to "auto-detect." If you're on a network that doesn't play nice with your Mac, there's nothing you can do, other than changing out the switches and/or hubs. Unless someone else has a better idea.

Because the idiots where I work have a network that is all messed up.
By throttling down the card, you get better through put. So they say.
Worked for a guy with a PC.

other media types: see ifconfig
